Note on scoring of “Passed Out” boards:

The table below shows how the points were allocated on Board 20 where 2 of the hands played were passed out.  In these cases the E-W pair are awarded zero points score.  This has the result that in the allocation of match points, each pair in a pass-out situation will be awarded average points (in the case of our full 4 table movement – 3 points each).

Board 20

NS   EW   NS Score   EW Score   NS Pts   EW Pts   Contract
   0 3  Passed Out
110    0  1S+1 S
   110 6  3D= E
   0 3  Passed Out

The rule for the number of match points per board is as follows:

(No of N-S pairs) times 2, minus 2 = No of points for top score.  In a full 4 table movement 4 x 2= 8, minus 2, gives 6 points for top spot.  2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd gets 2 points, last gets no points (joint places get 5, 3, 1, 1 respectively such that the total N-S points per board is always 12 points.  Likewise for E-W.  Where hands are not played at all the scoring gets more complicated again, but we’ll save that one for another day.
